Kite Surfing is big news on the South Coast of the UK and the only thing these sportsmen and women like more than a windy day and getting wet, is driving cool vans and kicking back with mates after a session in the water. As VW enthusiasts we know a thing or two about having fun in campervans, so a weekend away at Kitesurfing Armada Festival on the beach at Hayling Island for Andy, Simon, Mark and Eva wasn’t a hard sell!
Professionals, like Hannah Whiteley and Lewis Crathern who joined our Heretics evening back in May, were on hand all weekend to talk through ways to improve, and also show off the latest kit from their sponsors. Making it look simple is something many of these guys and girls do well.
Meeting new people
One of the best things about what we do is meeting people who have enthusiasm. These guys might put kite surfing above their love of vans, but they definitely care about camping too.
As pollution is a very topical subject for fans of all watersports, the event tried to operate as best it could ‘plastic free’. For those needing to recycle, a large fish sculpture encouraged you to place your old cans and bottles inside it. As campsite sponsors, we prepared goody bags for all those staying for the duration; complete with a few camping essentials and a spot of merch too.
Away from our stand, set up in front of our Tischer T25 Andy, Mark and Simon spent the evenings chatting about conversions and showing off what they have each done with their vehicles.
Out of the blue
Back on dry land, there was family-friendly fun for all. Whether you wanted a drink and something to eat, to sit in the sun and watch the music stage or stunt shows, go shopping for the latest technical gear or try your hand at slack-lining the Armada team had laid it on for you.
Of course, we couldn’t go to an event like this without checking out the other campervans on site, and some lovely examples there were too.´It wasn’t just modern motorhomes either, lovely to see a handful of Bay buses, a few wedges, and even a classic LT!
We had such a fantastic time at this event. The atmosphere was brilliant, the people so friendly the location was wonderful and the weather was on side too, although a bit more wind would have been nice (for the surfers, not us!)
Catch you at the next one, cheers!
